Baghdad, June 9, 2021 – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Iraq, Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, today briefed the representatives of the diplomatic missions accredited in Iraq in Baghdad on the latest resolution of the Council of security in Iraq and the strengthened mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
In its resolution 2576 (2021) adopted on May 27, the Security Council commended the efforts of the Government of Iraq to plan and organize genuinely free and fair early elections that are credible, participatory and inclusive, with the full, equal and meaningful participation. women. The resolution also welcomed the government’s request for further advice, support and technical assistance from the United Nations in this regard.
UNAMI is already providing technical assistance and comprehensive advice to IHEC on election management, legal and regulatory frameworks, training and procedures, Covid preparation, procurement, logistics, information technology and communication, field coordination, communications and awareness raising, gender policies and election security. planning at headquarters and governorate levels. “With more than 70 United Nations electoral staff currently deployed across the country, the goal is to strengthen Iraq’s electoral capacity and promote transparency, thereby restoring confidence in Iraqi electoral institutions and processes. », Clarified the SRSG Hennis-Plasschaert.
In line with the recently adopted Security Council resolution, UNAMI is preparing for the gradual deployment of additional United Nations teams to the field before and on election day. The SRSG called on the international community to support this initiative in order to ensure that sufficient UN election personnel can effectively be deployed.
“In response to the request of the Iraqi government, the Security Council has decided to endorse a strengthened, strong and visible United Nations team, with additional staff, ahead of the upcoming elections in Iraq, to monitor election day in Iraq with as wide a geographical coverage as possible. possible, and to continue to help with the election, in a way that respects Iraqi sovereignty, ”said SRSG Hennis-Plasschaert.
The SRSG underlined the importance for all Iraqis to exercise their democratic right by voting in large numbers, thus making these elections a real democratic milestone in the history of Iraq. “The Iraqi people have spoken loud and clear to demand these elections: the time has come to make these voices heard at the polls. This is your country, and your vote can shape Iraq’s future ”.
“The United Nations fully supports the desire of the Iraqi people for a political system that truly represents them and meets their needs. The early October elections can help fulfill this desire, hopefully strengthening the foundations for a strong, stable and sustainable Iraq, ”said SRSG Hennis-Plasschaert.
In accordance with the Security Council resolution, she also clarified that the elections are at all times led and held by the Iraqis: “It is first and foremost the responsibility of Iraqi institutions and political leaders to ensure transparency and accountability. in the electoral process.
