Protesters are fatally shot in the Sudanese capital Khartoum and other Sudanese towns. Internet and mobile networks are cut, but rallies against the military are reborn. And as South Africa emerges from its fourth wave of the pandemic, many of its citizens believe the travel restrictions imposed on them by some foreign countries were unfair.

Islam was the state religion of Sudan, and Islamic laws applied from 1983 to 2020, when the country became a secular state. The economy has been described as lower middle income and relies on oil production. Sudan is a member of the United Nations, the Arab League, the African Union, COMESA, the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organization for Islamic Cooperation.
