Trade and Industry and Food and Public Distribution Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday reviewed the arrangements and preparations made by the governments of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal to cope to Cyclone Jawad.

Industry associations at the national level such as CII, FICCI, ASSOCHAM and PHD Chambers were also represented at the conference organized by videoconference.

The Minister provided an update on the preparations underway by the respective state governments. He also reviewed the suggestions for successful mitigation made by ministries, state governments, industry bodies and other organizations and appreciated the concerted efforts to mitigate the cyclone.

He said this collaboration was a worthy example of cooperative federalism at its best. He also stressed the need to develop a comprehensive action plan to manage this natural disaster in the most effective way by integrating the contributions and suggestions of all stakeholders.

Goyal said the public-private partnership was necessary for disaster management and mitigation and to protect the lives and livelihoods of those affected. Observing that the cyclone seemed to be milder, he said: “We must constantly upgrade our learnings and continue to improve our capabilities.” He also called for the preparation of the banking and insurance sectors to combat the effects of the cyclone.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the region of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify in Cyclone Jawad and is expected to reach the northern coast of Andhra Pradesh – Odisha by afternoon today, with wind speed up to 100 km / h.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, proactive disaster preparedness and management is being institutionalized. The Prime Minister has personally reviewed disaster management preparedness and has also instructed various ministries to work with state governments, industry and all other stakeholders to ensure minimum damage to the life and property.
