IndiGo publishes its first ESG report titled IndiGo Green

India’s leading operator IndiGo has published its first ESG report. Baptized as IndiGo Green, the report shares the company’s vision for good governance and an overview of environmental and social performance. The airline has been institutionalizing a sustainable approach to operations over the past few years, where sustainability is built into day-to-day operations.
IndiGo has taken several steps towards sustainability, investing in fuel efficient engines, planting trees, sponsoring biogas plants and investing in water conservation projects. IndiGo recorded a reduction of 1,478,359 tonnes of carbon emissions from fiscal year ’15 to fiscal year ’21. In FY ’23, the airline aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 18% by ASK compared to FY ’16.

Even during the pandemic, the management team ensured that resources were allocated wisely to strengthen operations and ensure sustainable future growth.

As part of corporate social responsibility (CSR), the airline engages with communities in four areas of intervention: children and education, women’s empowerment, the environment and heritage .

As part of the “6E Responsibility”, IndiGo reaches out to communities wherever there is a natural calamity. The airline extended its support during the covid-19 pandemic by providing food packages to people in the Delhi / NCR area who were struggling for their daily meals. IndiGo launched plasma donor bank initiative, employee assistance program and 24/7 helpline, vaccination campaigns and partnered with hotels for quarantine facilities for employees and their families. IndiGo has also set up a central task force supported by regional task forces, to monitor and review response strategies to Covid-19.
The ESG report also highlights the progress made by the airline and its efforts to enrich the flight experience for customers, develop the skills and diversity of employees and protect the planet’s biodiversity.

Key initiatives for FY22 include the renewal of IOSA accreditation and continuous improvement of the safety management system; climate adaptation strategy and action plan and support programs on environmental sustainability; and accelerate people’s capacities through training and development programs, improve automation of policies and processes and new programs on improving diversity and inclusion.
