The two countries established diplomatic relations on September 5, 1949, but several sources point out that relations strengthened after Ernesto Che Guevara’s visit to Cairo in 1959.
On previous occasions, Rodriguez has indicated that over decades of bilateral relations, important achievements have been made in terms of political agreement and exchanges in areas of mutual interest such as the economy, commerce, education and culture.
Recently, the chambers of commerce of Cuba and Egypt signed a cooperation agreement to stimulate new business opportunities in areas such as mining, transport, renewable energy, internal trade, health, education, among others.
In addition, each year Egypt supports the resolution that Cuba presents to the United Nations General Assembly to demand the lifting of the American economic, commercial and financial blockade.
The two nations coincide in multilateral forums such as the Group of 77 plus China and the Non-Aligned Movement.
