The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, commended the Cuban government for its continued support for the implementation of various programs in Uganda.

Among the remarks made during a meeting with Mr. Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, at the Africana hotel in Kampala, on Sunday 26 June.

“I recognize the instrumental role that your government plays in improving our education, our agriculture and, above all, the health sector,” said Ms. Among.

In particular, she praised the role played by Cuban doctors in the creation of the Mbarara University of Science and Technology, which has since trained more than 1,000 health professionals.

For his part, Mr. Parrilla said, “Cuba is willing to strengthen its ties with Uganda for socio-economic transformation. We will surely continue to support Uganda.

He hailed the “hospitable nature of Uganda” and recalled the longstanding cooperation between the two countries.

Uganda and Cuba have enjoyed excellent diplomatic relations since Cuba opened its diplomatic mission in Kampala in the 1960s.

The two countries have strengthened their respective positions in international forums through the Non-Aligned Movement, the G77 and the United Nations, where Parrilla said they have always defended and protected each other’s strategic political and economic interests. .

Speaker Among also thanked President Museveni for the continued engagements with different countries on strategic social, political and economic partnerships.

In 2018, for example, President Kaguta Museveni met with a contingent of specialist Cuban scientists at State House Entebbe to work with indigenous experts to develop an anti-tick acaricide called Gavac and improve training for medical workers in Uganda.
